Seminar on Antimicrobial Resistance in Nepal, Lalitpur
On 5th February 2025, GlohMed organized a seminar on AMR, inviting young microbiologists and biotechnologists as the target audience. The event took place at GlohMed meeting hall, Lalitpur, with participation of 20 young scientists.
Our Guest speaker was Mr. Raj Shrestha, MSc, trained at Mahidol University, Thailand. He is a molecular microbiologist currently working as a Research officer at Siddhi Memorial Hospital, Bhaktapur, as well as a co-investigator of GlohMed. He has led maternal-neonatal colonization studies partially supported by GlohMed. His areas of interest include epidemiology and characterization of mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance in Gram-negative bacterial pathogens with a focus on the pediatric population. Mr. Shrestha shared his understanding of the drivers of AMR in low-resource settings and discussed novel approaches for its mitigation.
Additionally, Mr. Shrestha shared progress updates on a GlohMed supported study titled “Colonization with multidrug-resistant pathogens in neonates and the risk factors for their acquisition”, which is ongoing at Siddhi Memorial Hospital and Bhaktapur Hospital. In this study, his team is investigating clinical as well as non-clinical risk factors for the acquisition of bacteria in neonates. Furthermore, the study findings are anticipated to characterize the features of maternal-newborn colonization across multiple time points, and screen antimicrobial-resistant genes and genetic similarity between a mother and her newborn.
