CME on “Electronic tool for maternal-newborn records (e-MNR) and perinatal outcomes”, Kathmandu

On 5th February 2025, GlohMed organized a CME/ Seminar at Paropakar Maternity and Women’s Hospital, government-run largest maternity hospital, which was attended by around 40 staff working at different units (clinical, IT, records). Seminar covered three important topics that invited an insightful discussion.

  1. Electronic Tool for Maternal Newborn Data Records (eMNR): Structure & Piloting.
With support from LSHTM UK, GlohMed just completed a digital health project in which an e-MNR tool was developed and piloted in two government hospitals, demonstrating its tangible benefits in tracking ANC-delivery-postanal-newborn data including maternal vaccination records. Such e-Tool can certainly help health facilities streamline maternal newborn data and aid to routine monitoring & evaluation of MNCH services.
  2. Maternal-Newborn Bacterial Colonization: Progress Update on a Pilot Study.
In collaboration with international expert groups, GlohMed team has been swabbing pregnant mothers and their newborns to investigate bacterial colonization, with focus on Group B Strep, a pathogen that often leads to dreadful perinatal infections and adverse birth outcomes.
  3.  Perinatal Infections, Antibiotic Practices & Antimicrobial Stewardship: Research Gaps.
With support through RSTMH ECR fellowship, one of our research fellows (Dr. Rabin Thami) is looking at maternal-newborn infections and antibiotic practices in a tertiary maternity hospital, linking the data to adverse birth outcomes. The evidence will ultimately feed the evidence to the design of a multidisciplinary antimicrobial stewardship programme.
