One Health Conference 2025, Kathmandu (Participation)
Antimicrobial resistance is a rising public health issue worldwide, and experts have suggested ‘One Health’ approach to tackle this alarming situation.
In March 2025, two clinical microbiologists Dr. Ravi Shankar Gupta and Dr. Chandana Jha (GlohMed investigators), from National Medical College & Teaching Hospital, Birgunj (which is one of our study sites), participated in ‘One Health Conference’ held in Kathmandu, March 24-25, 2025. This scientific participation was supported through GlohMed.
This 2-day packed conference was organized by the Nepalese Association of Clinical Microbiologists (NACM) and fhi360 Nepal, with support from FCDO Nepal and Fleming Fund UK, with the theme “Multidisciplinary approach to combat AMR in infectious diseases”.
As AMR keeps on rising due to misuse and increased use of antimicrobials in humans and animals, it is essential to develop strategies for precision diagnostics and policies around rational antimicrobial use.
Dr. Chandana reflected on the conference – “A topic which I found interesting was the impact of vaccines on AMR and how healthcare professionals (promoting vaccination and leading antimicrobial stewardship initiatives) can fight AMR at local level”. She further recalled her learning and shared a take home message – “AMR can be combated by combined efforts of human health professionals, microbiologists, veterinarians, environmental scientists and policymakers”.
GlohMed has been a long-time advocate of AMR reduction, through its research and public engagement. Recently it co-developed an educational video on AMR which can be found here: https://glohmed.org/education-and-training/
